Tolls and the vignette in Austria

Who needs a vignette

Every vehicle up to 3.5 tonnes maximum permissible weight using motorways or expressways: cars, campervans within that weight and motorcycles in their own category. Heavier vehicles use a distance-based scheme with a dedicated device instead of a vignette.

Which periods exist

From one day up to a year. A straight crossing needs only the shortest period, while a holiday usually calls for the 10-day vignette. Every period, with its price breakdown, is listed on the Austria country page.

What the vignette does not cover

A few routes cost extra, among them the Brenner, Tauern, Arlberg and Karawanken. Which ones and how you pay is set out in the guide section tolls in Austria.

Exempt sections near the border

A few short stretches just beyond the border are exempt, such as parts of the A 12 near Kufstein and the A 14 in the Vorarlberg Rhine valley. As soon as you drive on, the vignette requirement applies again.

If the vignette is missing

Cameras and mobile teams do the checking, and a substitute toll comes first. What follows is described in the guide fines for driving without a vignette in Austria.
