Section tolls in Austria: Brenner, Tauern, Arlberg, Karawanken

Why the vignette is not enough here

On most motorways and expressways the vignette is all you need. A few demanding alpine routes are carved out and carry their own costs: there a separate toll is charged per journey. The two run side by side — the approach roads to the toll station still require a vignette.

The main routes

The A 13 Brenner motorway between Innsbruck and the Italian border. The A 10 Tauern motorway with the Tauern and Katschberg tunnels on the way to Carinthia. The Arlberg tunnel on the S 16 between Tyrol and Vorarlberg. The A 11 Karawanken tunnel towards Slovenia. On the A 9 Pyhrn motorway, the Bosruck and Gleinalm tunnels.

How and where you pay

At the toll stations by card or in cash; for several routes tickets can be bought digitally in advance. Motorcycles have their own rates. Depending on the ticket, the toll covers a single crossing or a return trip.

Alpine roads are a separate matter again

The Grossglockner High Alpine Road, the Timmelsjoch and the Silvretta High Alpine Road are private toll roads. They have nothing to do with the vignette or with section tolls and are paid on site.

What this means for your route

Driving to Italy over the Brenner: a vignette as far as the toll station, plus the Brenner toll. Driving to Croatia through the Karawanken: a vignette plus the tunnel toll, then the Slovenian vignette. Austrian periods are listed on the Austria country page, Slovenian ones on the Slovenia country page.
